Argentina: hide exports on hold

22/02/2021

A meat industry federation in Argentina has called on the government to resolve a roadblock in exports of wet-salted hides from the South American country.

The organisation, FIFRA, said its members had asked for an extension to arrangements for exporting wet-salted hides that was in place in Argentina until the end of 2020.

In recent comments in local media, FIFRA said it had received assurances from two government ministers, industry minister, Matías Kulfas, and his counterpart in the department for agriculture, Luis Basterra, that they would grant an extension and that meat companies would be able, once again, to bring in much-needed money from shipping wet-salted hides to tanners overseas.

However, it said approval of the extension had not yet emerged, making it impossible for them to sell their hides to customers outside the country.
