COTANCE-UNIC organise workshop on traceability

Italian tanning industry association UNIC and the industry’s representative body in the European Union, COTANCE, jointly arranged a workshop at the Lineapelle exhibition in Milan. Its title was ‘Sustainability partnerships in the leather industry: focus on raw material’; sessions covered animal welfare, traceability in the leather supply chain, hide and skin quality and land use.

This event took place as part of a programme called Social & Environmental Reporting 2020, which has the support of the European Commission. Trade union organisation IndustriAll-Europe also took part.

Addressing delegates from all parts of the world, COTANCE president, Andreas Kindermann, said: “Our raw material is only available to us because consumers want meat and milk and, therefore, farmers raise cattle. When the cattle die, instead of throwing the hides away, we think it is far better to tan them. We transform the material that is available into a sustainable, durable product that fits our customers’ needs perfectly.”

He went on to explain that the leather industry must address questions around traceability and animal welfare. “Our customers want to know where the leather comes from and we want to know where the hides come from,” he said. “All stakeholders need to work together on this.”
