Hides, skins and leather can help double intra-African trade

Shipments of hides, skins and finished leather from one African country to another could be a major factor in boosting intra-African trade, a senior figure at the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has said.
Gainmore Zanamwe, a senior manager at the Cairo-based bank, has said trade between African countries currently stands at $200 billion per year but that the total could quite easily be twice as high. He said a “lack of market information” is a major barrier to growth.

In giving examples, Mr Zanamwe said he could see no reason why countries in southern Africa were importing hides and skins from Australia when the raw material is available much closer to home at much lower prices. He said that he could see no reason either why companies in South Africa are importing finished leather from India.
