Pakistan shows early signs of GSP+ benefits

Footwear exports from Pakistan have grown 17% in the first four months of this year, after the country was granted Generalised System of Preferences (GSP)+ status by the European Commission, starting on January 1.

The GSP+ reduces import tariffs to zero – making it an attractive sourcing destination for European companies and retailers.

Pakistan’s Minister for Commerce, Khurram Dastgir, said the government would allocate funding for the leather industry, to allow tanneries to tan and finish leather, which can then be used by footwear makers.

Members of the Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturing Association said the sector should be granted same benefits as the textile sector.
