It will be business as usual for Clariant at IILF

The leather business unit of specialty chemicals manufacturer Clariant will have a number of new products on display at the 2014 edition of the India International Leather Fair (IILF) in Chennai (February 1-3).

Clariant is in the process of selling its leather business to rival chemicals manufacturer Stahl, with both parties expecting to complete the deal later in 2014. For the time being, it is conducting business as usual.

Its theme for IILF is “sustainable innovations in leather”, with the emphasis on presenting more eco-friendly alternatives to tanners.

Products in the spotlight will include the Fine Leather Upgrading system, a series of pure aqueous products aimed at helping tanners to make the best leather possible from the available raw material. “As the gap between supply and demand of higher-grade raw material is widening, upgrading has become the most important factor for our customers to stay competitive with their buyers,” Clariant said in the build-up to the Chennai event.

Its latest developments in finishing, Fine Leather Compacts, will also be on show in India. These products are especially developed for elegant leathers and can help leathers retain a natural look, softness and feel, the company said.

To give a specific example, the Aqualen Top FL-series provides aqueous top coats for leather that, Clariants has said, can meet the demands of luxury brands. They can be used as alternatives to the currently available solvent-based tops and are even suitable for the finishing of washable leathers.
