Boost for Belarus’s leather and footwear production strategy

16/10/2013
A leather and footwear holding company has been set up in Belarus to support the government’s plan of relying less on footwear imports, which it hopes to reduce from 64% in 2012 to 31% in 2018.

Upgrades at a newly established leatherworking and fur enterprise are in the pipeline, with a targeted output including 300,000 sheepskins per year.

By 2019 the holding company - comprised of San Marko, OAO Krasny Oktyabr, OOO Marko Service and Vitma - is expected to produce at least five million pairs of shoes per year and create 1,000 jobs.

In November, it was announced that a Korean group was investing in a tannery in the zone.
