EU ruling to hit Brazilian hides

This represents an increase of 35% compared with the same month last year, and means the value of exports in 2013 has risen 18% compared with the same period of 2012.
Despite the growth, the executive president of the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industries (CICB), José Fernando Bello, said Brazil’s exclusion from the European Union's Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) planned for January next year is a concern.
It could result in a 3.5% rise in duties in 2014, as the GSP currently allows developing country exporters to pay lower duties on their exports to the EU, which accounts for 36% of Brazil’s sales of hides and skins. The reformed GSP will focus support on countries “most in need”. The number of beneficiaries will be reduced from 177 to 90.
From January to September 2013, exports of hides and skins from Brazil totalled $1.8 billion.
