Australian cattle farmers claim their industry is no longer sustainable

The leaders of two of the biggest livestock farming groups in Australia have complained publicly of a lack of government support for the industry.

In comments to The Australian newspaper, Peter Hughes of Hughes Pastoral Group and Graeme Acton of Acton Land and Cattle Company said the government needs to take urgent action to lower the value in currency exchange markets of the Australian dollar to boost export trade.

They said the current situation meant beef production was “no longer sustainable” in Australia.

Mr Acton said: “There has been no margin for many, many years, and debt levels have escalated. I’m a major beef producer in this country and certainly beef production is not sustainable.”
