Leather pipeline escapes so far as China-US trade dispute escalates

China’s ministry of commerce issued a statement on March 23 saying the government in Beijing is “extremely unhappy” about the imposition of tariffs by the US and said it would take necessary measures to defend its interests.
A senior official, Wang Hejun, said: “The US has decided to ignore World Trade Organisation rules and has taken steps that will gravely harm Chinese exporters.”
In retaliation, the ministry went on to list 128 products that will now be subject to tariffs if imported into China from the US. Meat imports from the US will be affected, but examination of the full list suggests this will affect only pork rather than beef. While the list includes an extensive range of pork products, including carcasses, half-carcasses, hams, shoulders and other cuts of meat, pigskins are not there.
