Leather Pipeline: Falling dollar is a gift to US hides sellers

The weaker US dollar has proved a boon to hides sellers in the country, as Asian and Italian tanners increase their raw material orders, according to the Leather Pipeline.

The report says European hides are no longer competitive, and it would take “a pretty strong increase in leather demand to leave much room for other countries to grab any significant part of the business”.

Sources from China have reported that hides suppliers have been travelling around the mainland in the first half of August, which is much earlier than normal and causing some confusion.

The industry is now waiting for the All China Leather Exhibition in Shanghai (August 30 to September 1) to see how the market will be affected.
