Long summer break a worrying sign for Tuscan tanners

A senior spokesperson for industry in Santa Croce in Tuscany, Loris Mainardi, has said tanneries in that part of Italy have taken a longer-than-usual holiday this summer, with most closing for five weeks.

“Everyone is waiting for Lineapelle (Milan, October 4-6),” Mr Mainardi said in recent comments to local media. “Apart from that, we’ve had nothing except finishing off the final orders from last season.”

He said that aspects of the current situation that worry him include breaks over the summer at the major luxury fashion and leathergoods houses , which he has interpreted as a sign of a slow-down in  orders.

He also said that some of the smaller tanners in the Tuscan cluster are in trouble with at least one already having laid its workers off. He didn’t name the company concerned, but he added that his association is aware of at least one other leather manufacturer whose employees will receive the same sad news after the holidays.
