Does this signal the end of the internal combustion engine?

Swedish automotive brand Volvo has announced that all the new models it launches from 2019 will have an electric motor, a move which it says marks “the historic end” of cars that run solely on an internal combustion engine (ICE).

The company said into it intends to introduce a portfolio of electrified cars across its model range, which will include fully electric cars, plug-in hybrid cars and mild hybrid cars.

It plans to launch five fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvo models. The other two will be from its new high-performance car division, Polestar. All models will also be available in a petrol diesel plug in hybrid, and mild hybrid 48 volt options, Volvo announced.

“This means that there will in future be no Volvo cars without an electric motor, as pure ICE cars are gradually phased out and replaced by ICE cars that are enhanced with electrified options,” the company said.
