Tyson takes 5% stake in meat-free protein company

Meat and hide processor Tyson Foods has taken a 5% stake in Beyond Meat, a California-based company that specialises in plant-based protein.

Founder and chief executive of Beyond Meat, Ethan Brown, said at the time of the announcement: “This investment by Tyson Foods underscores the growing market for plant protein.”

For her part, Tyson’s executive vice-president of strategy and new ventures, Monica McGurk, said: “This investment gives us exposure to a fast-growing segment of the protein market. It meets our desire to offer consumers choices and to consider how we can serve an ever-growing and diverse global population, while remaining focused on our core prepared foods and animal protein businesses.”
