Muirhead celebrates 175 years with civic reception in Glasgow
Over 160 guests gathered at Glasgow City Chambers on November 6 for a civic reception and private dinner to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Glasgow-based tanning company Andrew Muirhead & Son.

Guests travelled from as far as Australia, Canada, the US, the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands, as well as from all parts of the UK to help celebrate the occasion with current and former employees and family shareholders. Guests of honour included the Lord Provost (mayor) of Glasgow, Sadie Docherty, and member of the Scottish Parliament, John Mason.

Managing director, Colin Wade, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating 175 years in business and would not be where we are today without the loyalty of our customer base, some of whom we have partnered with for 30 years. It is testament to Muirhead’s unrelenting ability to produce world-class, high-performance leather that we are here today celebrating our 175th anniversary.”

Now based in the East End of Glasgow, Muirhead was established in Pollokshaws, in the south of the city, in 1840, and began manufacturing hand-enamelled leather for baggage and footwear. Today, Muirhead is part of the Scottish Leather Group and supplies its “low carbon leather” to customers in the transportation and furniture sectors in 60 countries.

It classifies its leather as “low carbon” because the group has been running its own thermal energy plant at its Bridge of Weir wet-end tannery since 2010, taking what was previously waste sent straight to landfill and converting it into energy for heating the recycled water required in the manufacturing process.
