The UK has reported higher-than-expected sales of new cars in 2013, with the official figure passing 2.25 million new vehicles, an increase of 10.5% on the previous year and the highest volume since 2007.

If sales did not quite reach the levels the automotive industry reported before the economic downturn, it has pointed out that, in 2013, one in seven of the new cars consumers bought were manufactured in the UK, a higher proportion than before the crisis.
