$160 million for new Indian leather development programme

The Indian government has approved a new leather development programme (ILDP) for the country. The programme will run until 2017 and will attract funding of around $160 million. In a statement, the government said its aim was to encourage the overall development of the leather sector.

According to the proposals, the ILDP will comprise various “sub-schemes”, including human resources development, support for artisan leathergoods manufacture, technology innovation and environmental issues.

The programme also keeps alive the idea of setting up “mega-leather clusters” in India, which has been part of previous development plans but has proved more difficult to get off the ground than the Indian leather industry hoped.

As part of the human resources development initiative, the government envisages providing in-job training for as many as 200,000 unemployed people. In addition, two new branches of India’s Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) will be set up.
