Hermès buys d'Annonay tannery to secure supplies

Hermès is taking over d'Annonay tannery, one of its key providers of calf leather, to secure its supply chain.

The luxury leathergoods company – which owns two tanneries in France, one in Italy and a reptile tannery in the US – bought the French business from its 80 staff for an undisclosed amount.

It said in statement: "This acquisition is in line with the strategy of preservation and development of sources of supplies and know-how related to them.”

Growing demand from Asia has put pressure on luxury groups to invest in their supply chains, giving them more control over quality and volume. In October 2011, luxury group LVMH acquired Heng Long, a crocodile skin tannery in Singapore, and last year bought the Roux tannery, a supplier to it brands Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Loewe and Celine.
