Market Intelligence: Buyers’ knowledge of leather is ‘clearly eroding’

Delays to business decisions caused by autumn holidays in Asia, global trade tensions and other factors are increasing concerns in the leather industry about production running well below capacity in tanneries. This is the headline finding from the most recent Leatherbiz Market Intelligence report, which we published on October 14.

This is not happening everywhere, the newsletter said, but it insists it is affecting a broad enough range of manufacturers “to qualify as a genuine trend”.

Another factor it identifies is that the decision-making and technical competence in leather purchasing at a number of important brands “is clearly eroding”.

Consequences of this, it claims is that specifications are becoming “needlessly complicated”, approvals are being delayed or changed at the last minute, and questions from buyers to tanners can “spiral without a clear aim”.
