Gruppo Mastrotto creates suede collection from tannery shavings

Italian leather manufacturer Gruppo Mastrotto is presenting a new suede collection at Lineapelle leather fair in Milan (September 19 to 21) aimed at high end shoe-makers and brands.

The collection, which it calls ‘Absolute – the Suede Revolution’, integrates recovered tannery shavings into the production process.

Gruppo Mastrotto extracts and processes an organic polymer from the waste product to give it a new value.

This creates a material with strong colours and a soft, silky feel, said the tannery.

CEO, Chiara Mastrotto, said: “With this article, we wished to give tangible proof that luxury and sustainability can and should cohabit, without compromising product quality or design.”

Also at the exhibition, Gruppo Mastrotto Express, a logistics hub for off-the-shelf leather hides, will present three new collections: Clary, a fancy and semi-glossy lining with a nappa leather look, available in 13 colours for footwear and leathergoods; Power and Power Metal Free linings with a matte look and a high wear resistance, designed for the footwear sector and available in six colours.

All three of the new lines are antibacterial and antiviral thanks to a treatment that eliminates up to 99.9% of viruses and bacteria from leather surfaces. They are carbon neutral in terms of Scope 1 and 2 emissions, up to 75% renewable, and manufactured according to an LWG Gold Rated process with up to an 85% traceability, said the group.
