Years to build up US herd again

Senior vice-president and general manager of National Beef Leather, Robert Hein, has predicted that it will be 2014 or 2015 before cattle herds in the US begin to build back up.

At the start of 2013 the US national cattle herd was 89.3 million head in size, down by 1.6% from a year earlier and the smallest US herd since 1952.

Speaking at a press conference at the APLF exhibition in Hong Kong at the end of March, Robert Hein explained that it may be 2014 or 2015 before the herds start to build up again. “What that means is that there will be less product out of the US in the coming years,” he said. “The numbers will not be going back up in 2013. The drought that we have had, starting in Texas and moving up through the Midwest.”
